COVID-19   Festival Cancellation

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and out of an abundance of caution, the 2020 Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Ka Makana Ali‘i has been canceled. As of March 15, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. HIMELE will implement this recommendation for the safety and protection of its musicians, staff and festival guests.

The 2020 Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Ka Makana Ali‘i was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic emergency. Cancellation was based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, which recommended that for the next 8 weeks beginning March 15, 2019, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. Subsequent to that more severe Shelter In Place health directives were issed by the Hawai‘i State Department of Health to restrict the advancement of COVID-19 in Hawai‘i.

The 2020 Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival at Ka Makana Ali‘i was scheduled to be presented on March 21, 2020, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. at the center's stage with planned performances by six NextGen keiki steel guitar players and musicians and Hawaiian steel guitarists Alan Akaka, Jeff Au Hoy, Bobby Ingano, Kapono Lopes, and Greg Sardinha. NextGen steel guitarists and musicians from Ke Kula Mele Hawai‘i School of Hawaiian Music were to include Enosa Lyman, Ikaika Orlando, ō‘ailona Mahuka, Pono Fernandez, Mālie Lyman, and Ethan Goore.

The festival was planned to be presented free to the public by Ka Makana Ali‘i and the Hawaii Institute for Music Enrichment and Learning Experiences (HIMELE) in association with the Ke Kula Mele Hawai‘i School of Hawaiian Music.
